Rabbit Hole Housecleaning – Pt. 1

Holy Crap! Look at this place. I really should have had someone keep an eye on my rabbit hole while I’ve been gone. Who would have thought that a hole in the ground could get so bloody filthy. That’ll teach me to take time off from my blog. And my book. And writing in general. Oh well, I’ve made some personal adjustments, and now it’s time to roll up my sleeves and get organized. I’ve got a lot to do, so I think we’ll call this blog post Part One.

Eight months ignoring my laptop. It’s been sitting there, shooting me dirty looks like I’ve been cheating with my iPhone. And to be totally truthful, I have. I’m really quite gifted at avoidance – opening that lid would only remind me of my half-written book and a forgotten blog. I honestly didn’t mean for that to happen. Sometimes though, life gets in the way, or you lose your way, or the way gets a little hard to follow. Sometimes you need time to shut down and sort things out. Sometimes things just happen. But enough is enough! I’ve hiked up my big girl pants, and it’s time to get back to things, starting with my rabbit hole. I’m still going to use it to journal my experiences with writing, but I’m going to try expanding it a bit. But there will be more on that in part two.

Today is November 1st. For most people, this date is associated with candy hangovers and decaying pumpkins. For others, however, the first day of the eleventh month is the beginning of NaNoWriMo (God I love saying that to people…the looks I get are priceless). NaNoWriMo, or National Novel Writing Month, is a marathon of writing in which participants attempt to write 50,000 words, the length of a short novel, between November 1st and 30th. This is also the only marathon you’ll ever see me join. Sinceriously. (Oh yes that’s a word…Stephen Amell, aka The Arrow, created it and I’ve added it to my dictionary)

Most authors start a brand new novel for this death march. I considered it, I really did, but you see, I’m a Gemini…an “I don’t care if you believe in astrology or not because that is so completely me” Gemini. And, if you know anything about us Gemini’s, you will know that we are masters of the unfinished project. I love the world I have created so far, and I honestly didn’t want to chance leaving it behind unfinished. So I’m going to approach my task a little differently.

This is my book – or at least what I have so far.

pages

59,810 written words.
114 single-sided letter-sized pages.

Now, even though I haven’t opened that beautifully decorated laptop lid (because buying really cool nerdy decals is akin to buying flowers for a jilted lover), it doesn’t mean I haven’t been thinking about the story, the characters, or the possible plot bunnies that could create havoc in my little made-up world. I’ve got some editing and reworking to do to fit the new details into the existing story, but anything I have written so far is not going into my word count for NaNoWriMo. The first word typed after the last period on the last printed sheet will be word one. I am hoping that on December 1st, I will have a first draft of my finished novel that I can hand-off to a few beta readers.

Getting back on track with my book – step one in getting my rabbit hole in order. There are a couple of other big things that I have on the list, but I’ll tell you about them after I get things flowing word-wise. It’s going to be interesting…but that’s what digging your own rabbit hole is about!

Til later.
